Shared Hosting Install

Shared hosting is a type of web hosting service where multiple websites are hosted on a single server. This means that multiple customers' websites are all stored on the same server and share the same resources such as CPU, memory, and storage space.

Shared hosting is a cost-effective solution for small businesses, personal websites, and blogs. It's a great option for those who are just starting out and don't have a lot of traffic or need for advanced features.

Shared hosting providers typically offer a variety of plans that vary in terms of the amount of storage, bandwidth, and email accounts provided. Customers can also expect to receive a control panel, which allows them to manage their website easily, such as installing software, creating email accounts, and managing backups.

Note: Shared hosting can have some limitations, such as limited resources and lack of control over the server environment. Also, if one website on the server gets a lot of traffic, it can slow down the performance of other websites on the same server.

Server Requirements

First, check that all server requirements are OK. Refer to the official documentation for more detail.

Web Root Folders

The document root directory varies depending on your hosting control panel:

  • In cPanel: public_html/ is the web root folder for your NextHour.
  • In Plesk: htaccess/ is the web root folder for your NextHour.

Upload and Extract

  1. Upload nexthour.zip and extract it.
  2. In cPanel → File Manager → Settings, you must check "Show Hidden Files" to ensure all files (like .env) are visible.
  3. Move all files to the root folder. Example: public_html/ or public_html/subdomain.com/

File and Folder Permissions

In cPanel, you can change the file and folder permissions using the File Manager tool:

  1. Log in to your cPanel account and navigate to the File Manager.
  2. Locate the file or folder for which you want to change the permissions.
  3. Right-click on the file or folder and select "Change Permissions" from the context menu.
  4. In the "Change Permissions" dialog box, set the numeric value (e.g., 755). You can also use the checkboxes.
  5. Click on the "Change Permissions" button to save the changes.

Permissions are usually represented in a numerical format, such as 755, where 7 is the permission for owner, 5 is for the group, and 5 is for others. The types are read (r), write (w), and execute (x).

  • public_html: 775 (This folder is the root folder in shared hosting).
  • Subdomain Folder: 775 (If using a subdomain).
